Mayor of Irkutsk
14 Lenin Street
Dear Mayor Yakubovsky,
On behalf of the citizens of Eugene, we send warmest congratulations to you, the citizens of Irkutsk and your fellow countrymen as you celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War.
In our readings and travels, we have learned what monumental sacrifices Russians made to protect the motherland. In our conversations with our Russian friends, we have heard what sacrifices were made to defend the homeland. Many of our own fathers and grandfathers were also called to sacrifice in the struggle against Nazi invaders.
Today we mourn the dead, the losses of incalculable millions of people, known or unknown. Today we honor the living, their indomitable courage to endure such tragedy and find the will to clear the rubble of war and rebuild Russia.
Today we pay tribute to you, our brothers and sisters, and to the heroes of your country. In our mutual sister city work we are lighting the candle of peace for our children and for their children.
With deep respect,
Kitty Piercy, Mayor of Eugene
Galina Groza, President, Eugene-Irkutsk Sister City Committee
