A great festival of beauty and gracefulness that had attracted a lot of foreign guests from different parts of the world was held in Irkutsk last week. It was an annual International tournament of rhythmic gymnastics in memory of a great Siberian sportswoman, the sevenfold world and European champion, Oksana Kostina. She was the best gymnast of her times but one day she died in an awful car accident in the age of only 19 years. She was a very talented and friendly girl that’s why after her death all the sportsmen, referees and spectators of the next championship were standing silently during some minutes and crying.
From that times the best sportsmen from the whole world arrive every year to Irkutsk to take part in a tournament of her honor. The girls competed in several programs and all of them got prizes. Even the world’s championships can’t boast of such a great number of gymnastics stars.
The participants from 10 countries came this time to our city among which were Italy, the Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Mexico and the United States (it was the first time when the American delegation came). The American coach in her interview noticed that there are few such great gymnastics festivals in America and called Oksana to be the gymnastics sparkle and star. And it is difficult to disagree with her and I’m proud that Irkutsk doesn’t forget its citizens and I’m sure that this festival will be the best monument for this great Siberian girl.
